FAQs

DAN TravelAssist (a DAN membership benefit)

DAN Membership includes a package of medical transportation services (DAN TravelAssist) that are available to members who travel more than 50 miles from home. To be eligible for these benefits, you must be suffering from a medical condition (such as a sudden injury or illness) that requires immediate transportation from the place where the medical emergency occurs to the nearest appropriate medical facility for treatment.

DAN continues to provide this membership service. HOWEVER, due to the stress that COVID-19 is placing on medical facilities and evacuation service providers worldwide, members should know that medical transportation, access to medical facilities and other services provided by DAN may be delayed or unavailable due to government action or other circumstances beyond DAN’s control. If you are confirmed to have COVID-19, private medical transportation services may be unavailable to you.

Does DAN TravelAssist provide evacuation coverage for coronavirus?

No. Like most programs, DAN membership excludes coverage for contagious infectious diseases. In the case of COVID-19, both its existence and its presence at most locations around the globe have been known since January 24, 2020.

DAN continues to operate 24/7, and specialists are available to assist members with their non-coronavirus-related travel and medical evacuation needs. But please note this is a rapidly evolving situation, and DAN may not have the latest information about border closings, mandatory quarantines or other government or health agency actions that might restrict your ability to travel and/or DAN’s ability to provide evacuation assistance in certain countries and regions. Please contact DAN Member Services at +1 (800) 446-2671 or Member@DAN.org for more information.

What happens if the borders close where I’m visiting and I need medical evacuation?

DAN has limited ability to provide evacuation services in countries or regions that have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, including COVID-19 “hotspots” within the United States and Canada. Since each situation will be different (varying by country, the reason for the evacuation, the nature of the member’s injury or illness, etc.) you should contact DAN for assistance. While DAN will be unable to effect evacuations when prevented by government mandate, every effort will be made to work with local authorities to make sure you are transported to a place where you can get needed medical care.

What will happen if I contract COVID-19 on a trip? Will I be quarantined or evacuated?

These decisions will be made by local authorities, government officials and medical professionals in the location where you become ill. Some are treating in place (where you contract the illness) while others are evacuating infected persons to central facilities or their home countries. Regardless, the current protocol is to require a quarantine of at least 14 days following exposure. For those who test positive for COVID-19, the period could be substantially longer (depending on the length of a person’s illness), and you will likely be quarantined for an extended period of time (either in a facility or self-quarantine).

DAN’s membership program provides no coverage for medical evacuation, medical repatriation, quarantine, or other expenses arising from pandemics or pandemic-related quarantines, including COVID-19.

What if I travel to a high-risk country and need medical evacuation?

First, DAN advises against traveling to high-risk countries. DAN has limited ability to provide services in countries that have been affected by COVID-19.

As with most programs, DAN TravelAssist provides no benefits for medical evacuation, medical repatriation, quarantine, or other expenses arising from pandemics or pandemic-related quarantines, including COVID-19. To be eligible for medical evacuation, you must be suffering from a medical emergency (such as a sudden injury or illness).

Since each situation will be different (varying by country, the reason for the evacuation, the nature of the injury or illness, etc.) you should contact DAN for assistance. While DAN will be unable to effect evacuations when prevented by government mandate, every effort will be made to work with local authorities to make sure you are transported to a place where you can get needed medical care.

Travel Insurance

DAN’s travel insurance plan (not the dive accident plan) is underwritten and administered by Travel Guard, an AIG company. For the latest travel advisory and updates regarding your Travel Guard policy, please visit this site.

SPECIAL NOTE: Travel insurance is designed to cover expenses that you incur due to the cancellation of all or part of a trip due to certain covered events. In most cases, in order for benefits to be available the event must be unforeseen. In the case of COVID-19, both its existence and its presence at most locations around the globe are known. Therefore, most travel insurance plans do not provide coverage if the policy was purchased after March 11, 2020 (the date COVID-19 was publicized as a worldwide event). To make sure your policy covers COVID-19, check your policy effective date. If you have further questions, please call DAN Member Services at 1-800-446-2671, email us at Member@DAN.org, or contact Travel Guard at +1 (877) 828-6717 or ClaimsDoc@AIG.com.
