Public Lecture: PFO Doesn't Have to Stop You From Diving

We invite you to join us for the next DAN Public Lecture Series event. George Anderson will present "Filling the hole in your heart: PFO doesn't have to stop you from diving" at DAN headquarters, 6 W. Colony Place, Durham, North Carolina, on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m.Patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been suspected as a risk factor for decompression sickness (DCS) for nearly 40 years. Recently, cardiologists have begun to offer PFO closure as a risk mitigation strategy for DCS. Scientists have shown this procedure to be effective in reducing DCS risk in hyperbaric chamber studies and in standardized research environments. As of March 2019, Divers Alert Network has competed a study aiming to establish the effectiveness of conservative diving versus the closure of PFO for risk mitigation of DCS in "the real diving world".

Join Divers Alert Network at the Public Lecture series to learn more about PFO, how it relates to diving, who should get tested for it, how divers with PFO can limit their DCS risk, and about the findings in the recently completed DAN PFO study.

Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. for a pre-event social with refreshments. The 45-minute presentation begins at 7 p.m. and is followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session. This event is free and no registration is required.
