Dive Pirates
Dive Pirates is a nonprofit organization based in The Woodlands, Texas, that trains and equips Classified Divers (adaptive divers) as well as their buddies. Dive Pirates raises funds through membership, sponsors and chapters around the country to recruit injured veterans and other physically disabled individuals to join the diving community.
At DEMA Show 2013, Dive Pirates purchased several DAN O2 Cardiac Completes to support their programs and partner initiatives. “The Cardiac Completes attracted me because it has everything you need for a field-based medical kit. We train classified divers in the spring, summer and fall, during which we take our own oxygen units with us. Now, I have an oxygen unit, an AED and a comprehensive first aid kit all in one,” said Sophie Wimberley, vice president of Dive Pirates and a DAN Instructor. In order to ensure everyone working with the Cardiac Complete is fully trained on its use, Sophie is training them in DAN Basic Life Support: CPR and First Aid and Emergency Oxygen courses in addition to a rescue training component. Sophie says they have plans to acquire more kits once everyone is fully trained to use them.

“In order to keep people safe and enjoy this sport for the rest of their lives, you need to minimize the risks and equip them with the skills they need to dive and be a buddy. We prepare our divers to do that with a comprehensive approach to training including how to respond in an emergency. The Cardiac Completes are a great way to compliment that approach,” Sophie said.
DAN Training Courses
Developed by medical experts, DAN’s first aid training courses are easy to understand and designed to provide you with the skills and confidence you need to respond in emergency situations. DAN first aid courses prepare divers to manage injuries related to scuba diving. All courses meet the 2010 ILCOR and AHA CPR guidelines. The training can also extend to other environments. Cardiovascular Health and Diving
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the United States and one of the most common causes of fatal diving accidents. A healthy lifestyle increases a diver's longevity, quality of life and safety. There are several identifiable cardiovascular risk factors, methods of evaluating individual risks and preventive measures that reduce risk of CVD and related death.
