Diving & Travel in Southeast Asia

In the aftermath of the December tsunamis, the news has two faces: its inevitable tragic side, which we read or hear about daily, and a happier face, with stories of strength, perseverance and good luck. Plus, we’re looking for diving news.

As divers, we’re anxious to discover the fate of some of the world’s most beautiful dive sites, and the fortunes of the operators who take us there.

A growing concern appears to be the fate of tourism post-quake and the effect that it will have on local business. Operators on the opposite coast of Thailand are busier than before, as tourists have moved to that side. Operators throughout the region are reporting business as usual and are encouraging dive travel to their areas.

Most of the liveaboard dive boats in the region have now returned, as the posting below show. Most dive operators are running operations, other than shore-based operators in Khao Lak and Koh Phi Phi.

Early reports about large numbers of divers missing at sea appear to be untrue. According to John Lippmann, DAN President of DAN South East Asia-Pacific, reports indicate four direct diving fatalities in Thailand.

Certainly some divers were injured after being dumped onto reefs by large waves and strong surges. It is likely that other divers may have died along with the many non-divers while on the beaches relaxing.

DAN is receiving emails daily that update us on the status of diving areas in the region affected by the tsunamis. Check this site for periodic updates as more information comes in from DAN Members.

Special thanks to Chris Fox, World of Diving & Adventure Vacations, El Segundo, Calif., for his help in gathering information on dive sites and operators.
