What is the difference between a DAN Instructor and a DAN Instructor Trainer?
Instructors teach provider courses to divers and Trainers teach both provider courses and instructor courses.
What are the qualifications to attend an Instructor Trainer Workshop (ITW)?
You will need to be an active scuba instructor trainer and a CPR Instructor. We define a scuba instructor trainer as someone certified by their dive training organization to teach scuba instructors. Some examples are:
ACUC Instructor Trainer
CMAS Three star instructor
IANTD Instructor Trainer
NAUI Instructor Trainer or Course Director
PADI Course Director or IDC Staff Instructor*
SDI/TDI Instructor Trainer
SSI Instructor Trainer or Instructor Certifier
*PADI IDC Staff must also have DAN DES Instructor recognition.
Can I become a DAN Trainer even if I am not already an instructor?
Yes you can. The ITW might take a bit longer for you and we will ask that you teach at least three provider courses before offering any DAN Instructor courses. This will let you get some experience before you start to teach instructors.
I’m not a scuba instructor trainer, but I’d like to teach. Do you have waivers?
DAN does not issue waivers to any of the requirements for Instructor Trainer.
I know how to teach. What am I supposed to learn in an ITW?
DAN expects trainers to not only have role model quality skills, but also to be able to effectively break skills down and teach others how to teach. The ITW gives you plenty of time to hone teaching skills and learn the methodology and style of DAN Training Courses. An ITW including all of our courses takes approximately 24 hours of time.
Can I just be a trainer for one course?
To be able to offer a more complete instructor course, we prefer that all of our trainers be able to teach the courses which make up Diving Emergency Management Provider (DEMP).
Where do I find an ITW?
DAN Training Staff host a numbers of ITWs throughout the year. Our schedule can be found online in News & Events: Upcoming Events. We also have independent DAN Examiners located throughout the DAN America region. Under Training & Education: Find an Instructor, select Instructor Trainer level courses. You will then see the list of DAN Examiners.
How do I get the materials to study for the program?
Materials will be provided to you as part of the ITW by the Examiner or DAN Staff. Depending on the schedule, some examiners may provide them ahead of time with assignments. DAN Staff will provide them during the ITW itself.
Is there any continuing education I need to complete to remain current?
Yes. As a trainer, every two years you will need to teach or team-teach a instructor course in each course you are certified. Every few years, DAN Training requires trainers complete an update. These updates are offered by DAN Training Staff throughout the DAN America region or can be done online.
What can I gain from teaching DAN Courses?
The rewards are many. First, you help increase the knowledge of diving first aid and dive safety. Second, you assist us by supporting the DAN mission departments and areas such as diving medical research, the DAN Emergency Hotline and DAN Medical Information Line. And, of course, you can also make money for yourself by teaching DAN Courses.
