Scuba STAR Network and DAN Conduct Bimonthly Safety Surveys

The buddy system is perhaps the most important tenet of safe recreational diving, but how well does it work? Has your buddy been there when you needed him? Do you always find yourself helping your buddy? Do you end up swimming off in different directions?

Ever had an issue with buddy separation? We’d like to know about it.

Working together, DAN and the ScubaSTAR Network have developed a short survey. This issue’s questions involve incidents or situations wherein dive buddies become separated.

That’s just the beginning.

Six times a year the Scuba STAR Network will publish a quick Scuba Safety Survey in conjunction with DAN. The aim: to learn more about problems that recreational divers experience. We're not here to pass judgment or act as the scuba police, organizers note: We compiling this information to help divers enjoy our sport more safely. Your information is secure with us.

These reports are completely anonymous and should take just a few minutes of your time to complete. Your input will be reviewed and correlated by our staff, and the results posted for the benefit of our readers.

We’ll also provide an informal analysis of the results in Alert Diver magazine and other safety-minded scuba publications.

How can you help? Go to http://www.scubastarnet.com and answer several questions. We’ll tabulate the results bimonthly and post them on the both the DAN website and the Scuba STAR Network site.

Future survey topics include:

  • Predive safety checks: Who really does them, and how?
  • Emergency ascents: Did you ever make one, and how did it go?
  • Malfunctions of a buoyancy compensation device: What went wrong for you?
  • Deployment of surface marker buoys, lines and reels: What problems are divers experiencing?
  • Regulator problems: What types of problems; air-sharing experiences have you had?

Survey topic already covered include:

  • Low/Out-Of-Air Safety — Survey complete; Results coming soon!
  • Dive Computer Safety — Survey complete; See the results at scubaSTARnet (Click on the link above)!

Keep an eye on Alert Diver magazine and www.scubastarnet.com and take the plunge. Thank you for helping improve dive safety.
