Long before the interns arrive at DAN for participation in the Research Internship Program, DAN staff began activities pointing to their arrival for the summer.
Each year, the Durham Volunteer Center sponsors the Great Human Race, a fund-raising event for nonprofit organizations in the area. For the past five years, DAN Research has used the event to kick off the internship program.
Part of the money raised from GHR goes back to the Volunteer Center of Durham to continue its mission of connecting volunteers with opportunities for service to the community; however, a big part of the money raised partly funds the DAN Research Internship Program.
In addition to the walk DAN staffers have created new fun ways to collect money. Before the walk in 2008, GHR organizers at DAN sold hot dogs, baked goods and used books. Virtually the entire organization participated, enjoying the lunch while supporting the internship program.
DAN also conducted a raffle with drawings for various prizes, including a $25 gift certificate, movie tickets, T-shirts, backpacks and coffee mugs. In another fundraiser, employees, for a $10 fee, participated in Wear-Jeans-to-Work Week and were exempt from the dress code.
On a cold and rainy March 29, 2008, four DAN staffers (Jeanette Moore, Petar Denoble, Pam Everline and Jim Gaston) braved the elements for the 5K walk through downtown Durham. Despite the weather, it was a great way to mark another successful year of DAN staffers supporting the Internship Program and the Volunteer Center of Durham.
Jaclyn Messersmith, Jeanette Moore, Donna Uguccioni, Michelle Harrison and Beth Hawkins made up the 2008 event organizing committee.
