Streamlining Strengthens Ability to Provide DAN Mission Services
DURHAM, N.C. – As DAN prepares to celebrate its 30th year, the organization is taking steps to ensure its long-term outlook remains strong.
On Oct. 6, 2009, DAN announced a restructuring to the business side of the organization intended to streamline and strengthen the for-profit elements that supply and support DAN’s non-profit mission services. Components of the streamlining include budget reductions, spending reallocations and the elimination of nine positions from DAN’s workforce.
“In this day of economic uncertainty, the viability of any organization requires adaptability,” said Dan Orr, DAN president and CEO. “DAN is as financially sound as it’s ever been. Our membership remains strong. Our dive accident insurance program continues to be the industry leader, backed by a very healthy level of reserves. Our restructuring is an effort to make certain we stay that way.”
For divers and DAN Members, the restructuring means that DAN will continue to be the lifeline it has always been. The changes in DAN management will have no effect on the benefits and services divers currently enjoy. All of the non-profit services DAN offers remain in place, as do all DAN Membership benefits and all insurance coverage as provided in the respective plans. However, divers will likely feel a very positive effect down the road, as the restructuring creates opportunities for expanded research, streamlined and expanded emergency services, and additional training programs.
“Ensuring our long-term health is another example of DAN’s dedication and commitment to the safety of the diving community,” said Orr. “We made a promise to divers and dive safety 30 years ago, and we want to keep that promise for at least another 30 years.”
