DAN CPR and First Aid Course Coming This Fall
Last Updated: 9/22/2009 4:54:08 PM

Basic Life Support and First Aid Among Two New Programs Debuting at DEMA

Divers Alert Network® has long stood for emergency assistance and training, and at DEMA Show 2009, DAN® will enhance that reputation with the debut of two new Training programs, including a long-awaited CPR and First Aid course.

Basic Life Support and First Aid integrates basic CPR and first aid skills in an easy-to-understand format. The Basic Life Support (BLS) portion of the course includes airway management skills such as the log roll and recovery position and one-rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as well as additional skills like caring for a choking patient, controlling bleeding and caring for a patient in shock. Basic Life Support is followed by first aid skill training, including illness and injury assessments, bandaging and splinting skills and, finally, emergency moves.

“Divers have been asking DAN for this course for years,” said Eric Douglas, director of DAN Training. “We’re really excited to be able to offer it. What’s great about the way this particular course is designed is that it’s great BLS and first aid training for any layperson, but it dovetails naturally into our other dive-specific emergency training.”

The course takes approximately five to six hours to complete, and it meets current American Heart Association and International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) guidelines on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiac care. DAN will begin offering training for Instructors and Instructor Trainers at DEMA, including crossover training opportunities for current CPR and first aid instructors. Dive professionals interested in completing training at DEMA are encouraged to register early.

But CPR and first aid is not the only new offering coming from DAN this fall. The promised second phase of Dive Medicine for Divers will also make its debut at DEMA. Dive Medicine for Divers is a three-part program designed to take divers to the next level of first aid training. Part 1 lays the foundation, covering topics such as fitness to dive, risk assessment and physical exam techniques. Part 2 builds on that foundation by delving into topics such as decompression illness, barotraumas and equipment-related safety issues. Skill development remains an integral part of all DAN Training programs, and Dive Medicine for Divers: Part 2 teaches divers the art of taking a blood pressure and using an EpiPen in the event of a severe allergic reaction. DAN Instructor and Instructor Training for this new course will also begin at DEMA.
