DAN Offers Online Seminar “Pathophysiology of Decompression Illness”
Last Updated: 5/18/2006 10:47:41 AM

DAN now offers a second online seminar, in which participants learn about what goes on in the body when bubbles form.

The seminar features audio clips by Dr. Richard Moon, Senior Medical Consultant for DAN. In the lecture presented to a recent Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine course offered by DAN, Moon discusses such topics as the mechanical damage caused by gas bubbles in the body. The presentation also looks at the research into the history of decompression illness (DCI) and current research into ways to treat injured divers.

Jeff Myers, DAN Vice President for Training, said Dr. Moon's “Pathophysiology of DCI” presentation is the perfect complement to any diver's understanding of the subject. “Moon's look at the history of DCI research offers something for the novice,” Myers said.

“At the same time, it provides the more seasoned diver who has a greater understanding of diving physiology a great look at the mechanics of bubble formation and how this can cause damage to a diver."

Open to the general public, this presentation, which last about one hour, costs $25 US. Any participant will receive a certificate of completion from DAN.

DAN offers one other web-based seminar; it’s called Ears and Diving seminar. It too allows the divers to learn about diving and dive medicine in the comfort of their home or office.

"DAN Training and Medical Education departments strive to bring interesting and helpful information to divers, medical professionals and the general public in a variety of ways,” Myers said. “Our web-based training platform allows us to bring this information to an even broader audience than we possibly could through live presentations.”

About Online Courses...

Participants have hailed the first DAN online course, since it is both convenient and not pricey. Bill Hillermeier, DAN Member and Instructor, said he especially liked the flexibility of the Ears and Diving seminar.

“Being unable to attend is not as much due to the cost but either the location or a schedule conflict…,” he said. “I am a big fan of continuing education and think what you are doing will allow ongoing learning at the participants convenience.” <
