Little Cayman and Cayman Brac Hurricane Update
Last Updated: 10/5/2004 10:37:13 AM

First, everyone on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac is OK. No one was hurt or is without a home. We have all services and amenities up and going. The people who live in the Sister Islands have come together in a way that shows the strong spirit and soul of the Caymanian community.

Little Cayman: A few homes on Little Cayman were damaged by Ivan. All of the resorts suffered some damage, but most are planning on opening up again some time in October or early November. Every resort on Little Cayman lost their dock. Since Little Cayman tourism is more than 50% divers or water sports enthusiasts, new docks, more than anything else, will determine when each property can open their doors to guests. A summary for each Little Cayman resort and SITA member is post on the SITA website: http://www.sisterislands.com. The local church, bank, general store, gift shop, car rental, scooter rental, medical service, garbage collection, police, and shipping (food and goods) deliveries are all operating on a regular business schedule. Island Air and CAL Express are each flying regular schedules from Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, although I understand their reservation systems are not back on line yet.

Southern Cross Club lost four rooms and there was damage to two others. Both dive boast have sustained damage, so we have postponed our reopening until one or both are fixed; probably in early November. The clubhouse and kitchen are in great shape, so we're just waiting for the guests.

We are all incredibly thankful for our luck and our blessings. Now the Sister Islands, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, will do whatever we can to carry the Cayman banner while Grand Cayman gets back on its formidable feet. Let us open our doors to guests as soon as we can, and we will continue to show the world what Cayman hospitality is all about.

What can you do to help? VISIT us as soon as you're able to!

Sincerely,
Peter L. Hillenbrand
President
