Pelican Products Working To Save Pelicans With IBRRC
Last Updated: 8/12/2004 11:41:33 AM

TORRANCE, CA - August 11, 2004 - Pelican Products, a leading manufacturer of high-impact, all-purpose watertight cases and technically advanced, safety-approved flashlights, has joined the non-profit International Bird Rescue and Research Center's (IBRRC) Adopt-A-Pelican program to help shelter, care for and save the lives of three brown pelicans at the San Pedro, Calif. branch.

"These birds are more than just Pelican's namesake, they are an important part of our local ecosystem, and we are pleased to be in a position to help in the center's urgent time of need and we encourage others to do the same," said Terry Cox, Pelican's Vice President of Marketing.

This year, starving pelicans are showing up by the hundreds and the IBRRC's San Pedro, Calif. center alone is currently caring for 30 debilitated, dehydrated, and emaciated pelicans, mostly young birds 2 years old or less. Pelican's funds will go toward food (pelicans eat more than 20 pounds of raw fish every day), shelter, medical treatment to nurse the birds back to health and eventual reintroduction into the wild.

Pelican is chipping in at a critical time when experts are working hard to understand why starvation amongst the species is at nearly epidemic proportions. One theory states that the birds are mistaking asphalt for water tempting them to dive onto land looking for food.

Pelican supplies DAN with hard cases for its oxygen first aid units.
