Women Divers Hall of Fame Announces Scholarships

(Flemington, N.J. - Aug. 13, 2004) - The Women Divers Hall of Fame (WDHOF), an international non-profit organization that is dedicated to the women who shape the world of diving, has announced that nine scholarships will be awarded during the weekend of March 18-20, 2005 at the Beneath the Sea Scuba & Dive Travel Show at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, N.J. Applications are being accepted until Feb. 1, 2005 for the following scholarships:

HILLARY VIDERS PH.D. SCHOLARSHIP

A $2.500 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified woman of any age, diver or non-diver, who is enrolled in an accredited college level marine science program (undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate). Applicants must submit a resume and a 1,000-word essay, which describes the nature of their work and long-term goals.

CECILIA CONNELLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A $1.000 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving woman of any age who is an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an accredited course of study in the field of Underwater Archeology.

WOMEN DIVERS HALL Of FAME SCHOLARSHIP

A $750 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving woman diver of any age and background, the WDHOF Scholarship is to be used towards any educational program in the diving community.

REIMERS SYSTEMS (RSI) SCHOLARSHIP

A $600 scholarship will be awarded to a diver who is interested in hyperbaric medicine. This scholarship is to be used towards an accredited CHT course and necessary books. Candidates can be male or female.

HUGH FLETCHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A $500 scholarship will be awarded to any dive master, assistant instructor or instructor to learn to teach or assist the disabled to dive (odd numbered years). Candidates can be male or female.

WOMEN UNDERWATER SCHOLARSHIP

A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified woman diver for the purpose of expanding her education/training into the realm of technical diving. This scholarship is to be used towards decompression, overhead environment, advanced nitrox or mixed gas diving courses.

OCEAN PALS SCHOLARSHIP

A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving young female, ages 13-18 (and US resident), for the purpose of experiencing and / or exploring the underwater world. This scholarship is to be used towards certification, advanced training or any diving related educational program.

LIFEGUARD SYSTEMS (LGS) SCHOLARSHIP

Through their nonprofit organization RIPTIDE, LGS will award unlimited courses for a full year to a qualified woman diver. Applicants must:
  • 1) Show LGS copies of their diving certifications and any EMS / Fire / Law Enforcement certifications and IDs which they hold (note: EMS, Fire and Law Enforcement certifications are not a prerequisite for eligibility);
  • 2) Submit a 1,000-word essay of why they would like this scholarship, what they hope to gain from it, and what their long term goals are; and
  • 3) Supply two to three references that LGS can contact.

ISAM SCHOLARSHIP

The International Society of Aquatic Medicine (ISAM) will award a $500 scholarship to a female medical, dental, nursing or other applied health professional student to be used towards an ISAM CME meeting. Employed health professionals make less than $60,000 per annum may also apply.

The Women Divers Hall of Fame is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by Beneath the Sea Dive and Travel Expo, Women Underwater E-Zine, Womens Scuba Association, The Underwater Society of America, Hillary Viders, Ph.D. and Capt. Kathy Weydig.
