UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. - The International Poster Contest For Youth, sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programe, world famous artist Wyland, The Explorers Club, DEMA, DAN, NAUI, The Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences, USOA and other international educational and environmental organizations, has selected winners for the 2003-2004 contest.
The theme Protect Marine Turtles was chosen to encourage participants around the world to focus on the plight of these endangered marine reptiles. Sea turtle populations have drastically declined as a result of development on turtle nesting beaches, predation of eggs by animals and humans, entanglements in nets, ingestion of plastic debris that resembles jellyfish, a favorite food among some species, and accidents with watercraft, as well as pollution generally.
Young people from kindergarten through secondary school around the world participated the contest. "Their art depicts understanding of the issues facing marine turtles and the oceans," John Christopher Fine, the contest director said. "Not only have entrants shown talent and ability in creative work, they have expressed their concerns and hopes for the environment," Fine added.

Grand and first prize winners also receive a special signed work of art by Wyland, whose Whaling Walls bring awareness to environmental issues all over the world.
