Ron Steven, better known as Rogest, maintains one of the busiest schedules among environmentalists, artists and essential members of the dive community.
Helping the Blue Iguana
One cause Rogest has recently adopted is the preservation of the Grand Cayman blue iguana, Cyclura lewisi, is a unique creature that stands on the brink of extinction.
"I came across this amazing critter while diving, and painting with kids and adults at Divetech at the Cobalt Coast Resort on Grand Cayman," Rogest said in a recent presss release. With the inexorable growth of population in the islands have come dangers to these peaceful creatures.
"Conservation is always a challenging exercise," Rogest added, "balancing the needs of current communities with the desire to sustain the best of earlier environments. Often the needs for such efforts only become apparent when the problems have reached a crisis point, as in the case of the Grand Cayman blue iguana."
Rogest has dived in headlong to help preserve this creature. Recently Rogest and friends raised over $20,000 Cayman dollars for the National Trust on the Island of Grand Cayman. Divetech and Cobalt Coast Resort arranged a “blues” night, with a live jazz band. He also took part in outreach programs for local Cayman youth and more. See the accompanying PDF for more information on this fund-raiser and other events Rogest has taken part in.
