DAN SEMINARS

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 31
11 am.- noon — Steps to Recognizing DCI in Divers
(Room S330AB)
The purpose of this presentation is to provide recreational divers with key information to help in the decision-making process to seek further evaluation and treatment. It is not intended to make any attempt at diagnosing potential dive injuries. DAN hopes that divers are motivated to seek further dive and first aid education after attending this presentation.
Presenter: Marty McCafferty EMT-P, DMT-A

1-2 p.m. — Diving Fatalities: Three Big Reasons (Room S330AB)
DAN Research has been collecting information and analyzing data about diving fatalities since 1989. This seminar discusses the most common factors associated with diving fatalities and the annual fatality rates in insured DAN members.
Presenter: Donna Uguccioni, M.S.

3-4 p.m. — How Physically Fit is Fit for Diving? (Room S330AB)
Physical fitness is important to ensure diving competence. Surprisingly, there is remarkably little formalized evaluation of diver candidates or individual divers. Assumption of adequate fitness is potentially problematic given the societal trends for decreasing fitness. This presentation considers current patterns of physical fitness, evaluation techniques, desirable fitness levels for diving health and safety, and strategies to maintain or improve fitness.
Presenter: Neal W. Pollock, Ph.D.

THURSDAY, NOV. 1
10-11 a.m. — What You Should Know about Decompression Sickness Safety and Decompression Sickness Risk
(Room S330AB)
Some DCS is worse than other DCS. How can you tell what’s bad and what’s worse? What tools are available to help you make decisions?
Presenter: Richard D. Vann, Ph.D.

11 a.m.- noon — Trends in Scuba Diving Injuries and Fatalities (Room S330AB)
This presentation is derived from the actual data accumulated in the DAN annual reports. Divers need to be aware of the types of injuries that occur but also some of the contributory elements and possible errors that ultimately may be prevented.
Presenter: Marty McCafferty, EMT-P, DMT-A

3-4 p.m. — DAN Research Internship: Teaching and Learning (Room S330AB)
The DAN Research Internship program was established in 1999 to offer educational opportunities to young people who are enthusiastic about diving and science. This seminar discusses the 2007 internship projects in progress at diving operation locations, DAN Headquarters, and the Duke Hyperbaric Center.
Presenter: Donna Uguccioni, M.S.

5-6 p.m. — Oxygen Toxicity: How to Get It and (Probably)
How to Avoid It
(Room S330AB)
This seminar discusses the mechanisms of oxygen toxicity and oxygen exposure limits that are relevant to technical divers.
Presenter: Richard D. Vann, Ph.D.

FRIDAY, NOV. 2
10-11 a.m. — How Physically Fit is Fit for Diving?
(Room S330AB)
Physical fitness is important to ensure diving competence. Surprisingly, there is remarkably little formalized evaluation of diver candidates or individual divers. Presenter: Neal W. Pollock, Ph.D.

Presenter: Dr. Renie Guilliod.

Noon - 1:30 p.m. — Latin American Forum and Lunch (Room S330AB)

2-3 p.m. — The Health and Physiology of Scuba Diving(Room S330AB)
The focus of this presentation is the naturally occurring air spaces with in the body and how the hyperbaric diving environment can affect them. It provides information regarding common conditions that can affect these internal air spaces as well as information on preventing barotrauma and its effects.
Presenter: Marty McCafferty, EMT-P, DMT-A

SATURDAY, NOV. 3

1-3 p.m. — Freediving: History and New Perspective (Two-hour Mini-symposium Room S330AB)
Breath-holding has a well-established presence in the human history of underwater activity. The evolution into freediving has led to an explosive surge of interest in recent years. The lure of recreational and competitive freediving is reinforced by the steady rapid advancement of record performance in a range of breath-hold events. This mini-symposium presents a view of the history, evolution, physiology, training techniques and safety of freediving.
Presenters: Robert Croft, Grant Graves, Kirk Krack, Neal W. Pollock, Ph.D.
