Virtual Tour of Duke Hyperbaric Center : The Golf and Hotel Chambers
Golf chamber is 94 inches in diameter and capable of pressures up to 109 ATA (3 600 feet of sea water). The lower section of the chamber is a 10-foot-deep wet compartment with access through a hatch in the metal floor. Like Echo chamber, the temperature of the water in this compartment can be chilled to 0 degrees Celsius or warmed to 150 degrees Celsius.
The Golf and Hotel chambers were installed in 1977 by the Duke Hyperbaric Center staff and is the deepest saturation diving facility in the United States. Four deep manned dives (up to 69.5 ATA or 2250 fsw) were conducted in these chambers between 1978 and 1984. Referred to as the Atlantis Dive Series, these historic dives were conducted under the leadership of Dr. Peter B. Bennett.
Funds for the construction of these chambers were provided by the Navy Department, Richard King Mellon Foundation, Oceaneering International, and Duke University. As with the remainder of the facility, these chambers are U.S. Navy certified.
