Alert Diver Redesign to Debut in Fall 2009

Since the first issue was published in 1983, members of Divers Alert Network® (DAN®) have watched its premiere publication, Alert Diver, grow from a simple newsletter into one of the industry’s leading and most-trusted publications. Now, as DAN’s 30th anniversary approaches, Alert Diver again achieves a new level with several exciting additions to the magazine.

Beginning in Fall 2009, Alert Diver will move to a quarterly publication schedule, with a cover-to-cover redesign that includes a new format, an expanded page count and new editorial content. Of course, the mission content such as medicine, research and dive safety — long enjoyed by DAN Members — remains the core of Alert Diver, but readers will soon also enjoy in-depth features on dive travel, new columns on underwater imaging and marine ecology, information on new products and more.

Leading the redesign of Alert Diver are three new members to its production team: publisher and world-renowned photographer Stephen Frink, editorial director Keith Phillips and ad sales manager Travis Gainsley.

“I’m very proud to be involved with this new evolution of Alert Diver!” Frink said. “The great strength of this magazine has always been the research and dive safety emphasis that defines the mission of DAN, and this will remain the foundation of our communication to DAN Members.

“But we also recognize that we serve the most active group of divers on the planet, and they are very passionate about dive travel, underwater imaging and marine ecology. So we plan to add those interests to the editorial mix and deliver it all in a contemporary, high-quality format.”

Dan Orr, DAN president and CEO, sees the upgrade of Alert Diver as an exciting opportunity for both DAN and its members. “Moving to a quarterly publication schedule allows us to publish Alert Diver in the new format and add content we couldn’t before. Given the quality of the editorial content, the new graphic design and the planned improvements to the print quality, Alert Diver really will become a coffee-table-worthy collectible item.

“But our Members will have their cake and eat it, too," Orr added. "Because in addition to a beautiful print publication arriving at their door four times a year, with the release of alertdiver.com, DAN Members have access to an online companion that we update as frequently as we like. It’s dynamic, it’s interactive, and it allows us to disseminate even more information than we can with Alert Diver alone. In the end, the combination of the new Alert Diver and alertdiver.com brings so much more to DAN Members. It’s really the best of both worlds.”

The July/August 2009 issue marks the last of the bimonthly issues of Alert Diver. The first quarterly issue will arrive in Members’ mailboxes in November 2009.
