  • Noon -1 p.m.
Medicine and Research Topic: Technical Diving: The State of the Art, the Edge of the Envelope
Technical diving involves every stress the diving environment can impose, often in one dive. Technical divers break the “rules” and sometimes get away with it and sometimes they don’t. Yet dive safety is as relevant for these divers as it is for the vast majority of recreational divers, and what is learned from extreme dives benefits all divers. Divers Alert Network will assist the technical diving community in capturing information from dives that may be useful to this end. This presentation will:
    • review factors relating to the safe limits of respiration, CNS oxygen toxicity, narcosis/HPNS, thermal protection and decompression.
    • describe rebreather design, testing and operation relative to open-circuit diving.
    • discuss case studies that illustrate technical diving challenges.
Presenter: Petar Denoble, MD, D.Sc.; DAN senior research director
    Open to all

  • 2-3 p.m.
Medicine and Research Topic: The Ten-Minute Breath-Hold — Tricks and Traps of Apnea
World-record performance that includes static breath-hold exceeding 10 minutes and a maximum depth exceeding 700 feet (213 meters) has led to an explosive interest in the extreme sport of apnea. This presentation will discuss record performance, the physiology of breath-hold and guidelines for safe practice.
Presenter: Neal Pollock, Ph.D.; research physiologist
    Open to all

  • 4-5 p.m.
Medicine and Research Topic: Project Dive Exploration — Where Are We, and Where Are We Going?
Project Dive Exploration has been an ongoing research project for DAN since 1999. This presentation will provide an update and discuss the plans of the program, including the PDE Extravaganza and in-field collection sites. The PDE Extravaganza has completed its second year and has continued to be a great success for DAN Research. While the Extravaganza lasts for only three months, the you can share your dive profile data with DAN year round. Come hear how to share your dive data with DAN and help make diving safer.
Presenter: Donna Uguccioni, M.S.; DAN research coordinator
    Open to all

Translation: The purpose of this lecture is to show the attendees the physical, pathophysiological, biochemical and molecular principles for why a hyperoxic recompression within the controlled environment of a hyperbaric chamber is the definitive treatment for DCI.

  • 3-4 p.m.
Topic: Aptitud para el Buceo (Fitness for Diving) (IN SPANISH)
    Presenter: Dr. Cuauhtemoc Sanchez
*NOTE: This session will be presented in Spanish only. See the English version at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

  • 11 a.m.-Noon
Topic: Fitness for Diving (in English)
One of the best ways to ensure safety in sports is to be physically and medically fit for it. This reality is no different in scuba diving. About half the divers who get injured had a medical condition that would have excluded them from diving. This percentage is higher in fatalities; it is closer to 70 percent. Thus, the best preventive measure for sport divers to follow is to maintain their fitness for diving. This will not only enhance their safety but also their enjoyment of the sport.
Also, we will analyze the use of psychometric testing in diving as a tool to diagnose subclinical DCI, to follow up treatment results and to diagnose possible late effects of diving. We present the preliminary results of a controlled study between divers and non divers.
NOTE: This seminar is presented in English. The Spanish version is Friday at 3 p.m.
