DAN® and the Intermountain Hyperbaric Medicine Service will conduct a workshop June 29 to bring together international experts in recreational and technical diving to discuss extreme diving situations.
Intermountain Diver’s Day will also address dive safety, current treatment for dive injuries and special considerations for diving in the Rocky Mountain region.
The one-day event will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Doty Education Auditorium of the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah. Registration of $40 includes boxed lunch.
Participants and their presentations include:
- "Breathing Underwater is an Unnatural Act" by Richard Vann, Ph.D., assistant research professor, Duke University; vice president of Research, Divers Alert Network
- "Research Diving in Antarctica" by Neal Pollock, Ph.D., research associate, Duke University; Antarctic field research, N.Y. State Department of Health
- "What is DAN – Are You Really Ready to Dive?" by Dan Orr, M.S., president/CEO, Divers Alert Network
- "Treatment of Decompression Illness" by Simon Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., Fellow in anesthesia, Auckland City Hospital
- "Who is in a Hyperbaric Chamber when a Diver is Not?" by Jim Holm, M.D., attending physician and diving enthusiast, Intermountain Hyperbaric Medicine Center
- "Rebreathers: Just How Safe Are They?" by Jeff Bozanic, Ph.D., technical diver and instructor; author of Mastering Rebreathers
- "Diving at Altitude and Decompression Illness" by Paul Thombs, M.D., medical director, Hyperbaric Medicine Center, Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, Denver Colo.
- "Diving Accidents: A Review of Local Cases" by Lin Weaver, M.D., medical director, Intermountain Hyperbaric Medicine Center;
professor, University of Utah School of Medicine
The daylong gathering will also feature an Intermountain Medical Center tour of hyper/hypobaric chambers and discussion by a panel of experts on "Diving in the Rocky Mountains and Intermountain West."
