A discussion of fitness to dive will highlight DAN’s participation in the Scuba Show 2008 in Long Beach, Calif. At the two-day event, June 21-22, DAN® also will conduct a skills challenge and updates for BLSPRO Instructors and Instructor Trainers and for DAN Trainers and Instructors.
Neal Pollock, Ph.D., research physiologist at DAN, will discuss “How Physically Fit is Fit to Dive?” The presentation takes place 3 p.m., Saturday, June 21, in Room 305 of the Long Beach Convention Center.
“Every diver wants to be physically fit. Some are, some were, some could be, and some, well …,” Pollock said. “The general shift toward relatively inactive lifestyles and the potential for diving to be a lifelong activity make physical fitness for diving an important issue for both dive enthusiasts and dive leaders.
“Adequate fitness reserves are important when a strong, quick response can often keep a small problem from becoming a serious one. Relevant scenarios can easily be imagined for almost any dive. This presentation will discuss physical fitness for diving — targets, measurement, strategies for improvement and the implications of exercise on decompression stress.”

Free update for DAN Trainers and Instructors looks at 2007 and what’s new in 2008.
- Saturday, June 21, 10 a.m.: DAN Training Skills Challenge (new in 2008)
Free skills challenge for DAN Trainers and Instructors. Tell your students that even you practice to improve your skills. Participants’ names will be published in Alert Diver, and they will receive update credit and be entered into a drawing for an oxygen unit to be given away at the end of the year.
