DAN Lowers Cost on DEMP Student Handbooks
Last Updated: 9/15/2008 4:50:07 PM

The Goal: Create Better Prepared Divers

To underscore the value of the Diving Emergency Management Provider program and its ability to give divers a better understanding of how to care for an injured diver, DAN® has reduced the price of the student handbook materials.

The cost of the DEMP student handbook is now less than half the cost of buying all four component books, making it even more accessible and easier to teach. All DAN student materials come with certification cards, so there is nothing else to buy and no other costs.

Jeff Myers, DAN chief operating officer and executive vice president, said dive injuries don’t often come from a single source. “Multiple events cascade into a dive injury,” Myers said. “As a rescuer, you need to be ready to respond to multiple problems at a single time. The DEMP course trains divers to respond to an emergency that may start with a marine animal envenomation and then move to a rapid ascent and possible cardiac arrest.”

The DEMP course scenarios build on each other, helping divers understand the situation, rather than just treating a single problem. Since its release, the DEMP course has grown in popularity. “Now many DAN Instructors teach only that program,” Myers said. “They tell us they can’t understand why anyone would teach anything else. Most actually integrate DEMP directly into their rescue and divemaster courses.”

Since 1991, DAN has promoted the benefits of administering oxygen first aid to injured divers. Today the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries course is an industry standard. To raise the bar even higher, DAN created the DEMP course in 2003.

The DEMP course combines the key skills from four DAN courses into a single, easy-to-use package, without losing any of the skills practice or contact time included in the individual DAN courses. DEMP includes all the skills from:

  • DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
  • DAN Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
  • DAN AEDs for Scuba Diving
  • DAN First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries.
