Expect to see the DAN® flag waving again this year as the DAN staff walks in the Great Human Race on Saturday, March 29, 2008.
The Great Human Race, an annual event sponsored by the Volunteer Center for Durham, has become a yearly event for DAN, too. DAN staffers who participate raise money in support of the DAN Research Internship Program and to give back to the Durham community.
A portion of the proceeds will support the Volunteer Center and its mission to connect volunteers to community service opportunities.
This year marks the fifth year DAN has participated in the race; each year the event has been more successful than the last. This year DAN staff will hold two fund-raising events leading up to the Great Human Race. At noon on Feb. 21, DAN staff will conduct a hotdog cookout and a book sale at DAN Headquarters at 6 W. Colony Place.
The race begins at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham; it will feature a competitive 5K run and noncompetitive walk. For participation and registration information, see the Volunteer Center website. Runners and walkers follow a course that winds through the newly renovated downtown Durham streetscape.
The event celebrates local nonprofits. Support the DAN interns and the Durham community. Join the DAN staff for the GHR walk or attend the hot dog cookout and book sale.
To donate to the DAN Research Internship Program as part of the Great Human Race, visit the fund-raising webpage or contact Jaclyn Messersmith at 919-684-2948 ext. 611 or Jeanette Moore at ext. 260. They will collect money for the race and compile a list of interested staff who want to walk.

DAN Community Involvement
In addition to fulfilling the organization’s mission of helping divers in need, DAN staff continue their involvement in the community year-round. The Great Human Race is one of many events they support throughout the year. Other events include food drives during the holidays, sponsorship of a needy family by supplying a Thanksgiving meal, gifts of food and presents for a needy family at Christmas, care packages to soldiers in Iraq, and support of the Durham Rescue Mission and the Durham Animal Shelter.
DAN staff members fully appreciate the needs of our neighbors in Durham, and the DAN family marshals its resources and gives both donations and personal time.
