ABOUT Pacific Coast Chapter: The continuing medical education mission of the Pacific Chapter of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society is to develop and promote programs that improve the scientific knowledge of physicians and other allied health professionals, in the Pacific Coast and Western regions of the United States and Canada, in matters related to undersea and hyperbaric environments and appropriate applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Beginning with a Pre-Course on Wound Care taking place on Thursday, October 18th, the Conference Program will feature a number of outstanding local speakers and concurrent sessions. The Conference also attracts researchers and practitioners from all around the world and provides a wonderful opportunity to meet and extend contacts.
On Saturday, October 20th at 1:00pm, DAN's CEO and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nick Bird will present a talk on "Management of Decompression Sickness in Remote Locations".
Synopsis of Talk: Decompression sickness often occurs in remote locations. In such environments, treatment options and local expertise may be lacking. This presentation covers a description of decompression sickness, diagnostic criteria and treatment options in remote settings. Factors that may help guide decisions about treatment versus evacuation are covered.
Talk Objectives: 1. List onset times and prevalent symptoms of decompression sickness. 2. List pros and cons of in-water recompression and portable chamber use. 3. List decision factors when considering evacuation.
